Mental health is increasingly being recognised as an essential component of overall well-
being, deserving the same attention and resources as physical health. Regrettably,
marginalised communities such as the community of Makhanda in the Eastern Cape
continue to experience extremely limited resources that promote mental well-being. In
observance of the Mental Wellness month of October 2023, the Rhodes Counselling
Psychology Interns held a Mental Health Day with the Makhanda community, working
through the Assumption Development Centre (ADC) Counselling Hub. The event took place
on the 26 th of October 2023 at Nompumelelo Child Protection and Enrichment Centre.

The ADC Counselling Hub is a collaboration between the ADC, Rhodes University (RU)
Counselling Centre and RU Psychology Department. The purpose of the event was to foster
greater awareness, reduce stigma, and raise awareness of the existing psycho-social
support systems and services in Makhanda. In so doing, the vent aimed to promote the
development of comprehensive support systems and services around mental wellness
together with the Makhanda community. The Mental Health Day was a resounding success,
with many community members, RU Psychology staff members, ADC staff members, and
different stakeholder representatives in attendance. The presence of such a diverse group of
individuals was crucial in promoting mental health awareness and reducing the stigma
surrounding mental health issues. Participants actively engaged in discussions, activities,
and music, which helped foster a sense of community and support. The event highlighted
the importance of mental health and the need for continued, collaborative efforts to promote mental wellness in our society.
